Exhumation of German cancer patient showed he was murdered in Cretan village

The death of a German expat living permanently in a village by Ierapetra on the island of Crete turned out to be the result of a crime and not of the cancer he was suffering and thus in terminal stage. Police arrested a 45-year-old local man.

Exhumation of the body of the 65-year-old man ordered by local police authorities revealed that he had not died of cancer as he was in terminal stage but he fell victim of a crime.

Just 48 hours after the man’s funeral on April 9, an autopsy revealed that he was murdered in a brutal way inside his home, local media cretalive.gr reported on Wednesday, April 17.

The victim was found by one of the women who were taking care of him on April 7. He was laying on his back on the floor near the house entrance and had a wound in the back of his head. As there was no evidence of house break, it was suggested that he fell on the floor as he was unstable in his movements.

A security camera recorded the 45-year-old suspect man entering the victim’s home  15 minutes after 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 6. He was wearing a hood and gloves.

Although in the first phase the cause of death was declared to be “cancer”, information as well as an image from a security camera of a neighboring house proved a different reality.

The neighbors handed out the image to the security department in Ierapetra. proved otherwise.

The victim who knew his murderer had reportedly opened the door for him, however, no more information about how the situation developed inside the house that led to the victim’s death has been given to the press.

Two days after the funeral of the 65-year-old man,  authorities proceeded to exhume the body, where an autopsy was performed, while on Monday morning the 45-year-old, who lives in a village nearby, was arrested.

The local police is now investigating the motives murder as the victim had sold a house in Germany and had brought some of the amount to Greece.

According to local media neakriti.gr, he had given some of the money to the friends he made locally to save it for him.

Germanos

65-year-old Claus Rudolf Schlieber (?) was a retired truck driver, who was visiting the area for vacations in the last 30 years and decided to live in the village of Ferma the last years of his life. He was taken care by three local women.

The arrested local suspect, who occasionally worked as rescuer, is scheduled to be brought to prosecutor tomorrow, Thursday. In his initial testimony to police he allegedly denied to have seen the victim on the day of his death claiming he had gone fishing.
