Greece announcement to establish two marine parks one of them in the Aegean Sea has soured its relations with Turkey and thus less than a month before the meeting of PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara next month.
“We remain vigilant” said the Turkish Defense Ministry after Greece’s announced the establishment of the two marine parks – one in the Aegean and one in the ionian Sea, aiming to protect the seas from the climate change at the Ocean Conference on Tuesday.
“We will not accept unilateral conditions in the islands of the Aegean Sea,” the Defense Ministry added, in fact putting again on the agenda the challenging of Greece’s sovereign rights in the area.
“Our Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken the necessary diplomatic initiatives actions regarding the parks that are planned to be declared and has stated that unilateral fait accomplis actions in the islands and islets of the Aegean whose sovereignty has not been determined by treaties (EGAYDAAK) will not have any legal effect,” the ministry said in a press release.
“As a Ministry, we are on alert to protect our rights, interests and benefits in the Aegean and to prevent unilateral attempts to establish a Greek regime.” it added.
The reactions by both the Turkish Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense cast shadows to the preparation of the Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting in Ankara on May 13 and are also expected to influence negative the meeting of the delegations of the two neighboring countries to discuss the “Confidence Building Measures (MoU) scheduled to take place in Athens on upcoming Monday.
