Residents in 5 Greece’s regions receive storm warning message

Residents of Thessaly, Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, Central Greece and the Northern Aegean islands received a message via the emergency line <112> warning them of upcoming heavy thunderstorms and stormy winds.

The message warned them of the severe storms and stormy winds and urged them to “reduce movements unless absolute necessary” from the evening hours of Friday, April 19, until Saturday noon, April 20, 2024.

Minister of Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, already traveled to Thessaly on Friday noon, the area flooded by the storm Daniel in September 2023, and currently targeted by large amounts of rain. The minister will stay overnight in the area, in the city of Larissa, to supervise and coordinate meetings of the Risk Assessment Committee.

“The Committee partially upgraded the bad weather level and based on latest data, the storm will mostly impact the region of Thessaly from Friday afternoon until early on Saturday morning.

The intense weather phenomena are expected to start from the west and quickly spread to the central and northern mainland, the Sporades islands, Evia, the Cyclades islands, the eastern Aegean and possibly western Crete and later to the Dodecanese.

Rainfall and possible storm are expected in Athens and Attca in the night from Friday to Saturday
