Dozens of hooligans. among them at least one minor, were arrested in a big police operation during the early hours of Monday.
The arrests are part of an effort to crack down on sports violence, prompted by the fatal injury of 31-year-old police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis during football fan riots after an Olympiakos-Panathinaikos match in Athens in last December.
Police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis succumbed to his injuries caused by a naval flare on December 27, twenty days after the injury.
At least, 60 suspects, all identified as Olympiakos supporters, have been apprehended. while the operation continues.
Sources indicate that among them are individuals associated with the leadership of the Piraeus club’s organized supporters, daily kathimerini reported.
According to information by news website grtimes.gr, the arrests followed the execution of relevant warrants as police was collecting evidence all this time.
Primary charges are related to the establishment of a criminal organization, with additional charges anticipated for complicity in the fatal injury of the police officer by a naval flare.

During the operation on Monday, police gathered evidence by conducting searches of the suspects’ homes and vehicles.
The case file that reportedly has mover than 150 defendants is expected to be submitted to the prosecutor on Tuesday.
