An earthquake rattled with a 4.2 magnitude on the Richter scale the island of Crete on Monday morning.
According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the earthquake occurred at 5:07 a.m. and its epicenter was located in the sea area 51 kilometers north of the city of Heraklio. The focal depth was 14 kilometers.
No injuries or material damage have been reported.
Seismic activity is intense in the area since Sunday night.
“There is no particular reason for concern even if a larger earthquake occurs,” said the head of National Earthquake Planning and Prevention organization, Efthymios Lekkas.
“There have been 8 earthquakes ranging from 3 R to 4.5 R from Sunday night until Monday morning. These tremors were on average 35 km north of Heraklion,” Lekkas added.
He explained that “the earthquake occurred on a fault line with an east-west direction” and that the tremors were felt in Crete and Santorini.
We are on holiday in Heronissos since last Tuesday and have heard nor felt anything.
