UPDATE Body of baby found in landfill – Parents arrested

Police has arrested a couple of Nepalese nationals suspected of having disposed their newborn baby in a trash bin. While it remains unclear whether there was a birth or a miscarriage, whether the baby was dead or alive when disposed, its body was found in a landfill late Friday afternoon.

The couple’s arrest took place after the 30-year-old woman sought medical help in a public hospital for severe bleeding. It is unclear whether there was a birth or a miscarriage as both parents refused to talk to police but also to treating doctors about what happened.

However, according to an exclusive report by Mega TV Live News, security camera footage has captured the husband disposing something in a garbage bin. Authorities suspect he disposed the baby or fetus.

The couple has been reportedly working in a hotel in Vravrona, northern Attica, since one month.

Authorities started search in the hotel where the couple worked and accommodated and found blood traces on bed sheets and in the bathroom.

Police’s investigation started to focus on finding the baby’s body, however, the trash truck had already emptied the bins on Friday, and so investigation moved to the local landfill where municipality trucks dumb garbage from the area.

Late Friday afternoon, municipality teams that had joined the investigation found the baby’s body in a bag in a compressed mass of garbage.

The little body was deformed, had injuries in the head and blood traces. According to preliminary reports, it is estimated that it was 5 to 6 months old.

The woman went to hospital on Thursday night. Doctors who examined her confirmed her pregnancy but they could not determine whether she gave birth or suffered a miscarriage. She initially claimed that her bleeding was caused by sexual intercourse, one of the doctors who aided her told Mega TV.

“She later claimed that she was pregnant and suffered a miscarriage 5 months ago,” the doctor who started having doubts about the story said and informed the police.

The mother is hospitalized under guard and the father remains in custody at a local police station.

An autopsy is to determine whether the baby was alive or dead when it was thrown away and the exact causes of its death.

After the body was found the 24-year-old father admitted that he htrew it to the garbage bin claiming that the baby was stillborn.

Regarding the injury on the baby’s head, he argued that it was caused when he threw it, while he said that he did it because he was afraid as he comes from a foreign country and did not want to be accused of murder.
