Greece Weather: First “heat” wave with temperatures over 35°C

A wave of unusually increased temperatures way above the seasonal average is on the way to Greece as of Thursday, May16. Temperatures are forecast to reach 32 degrees Celsius, up to 35°C in the following weekend and even higher in Crete.

The weather will remain unstable until next Wednesday, May 15, 2024 (16.05.24),

According to forecast of Thodoris Kolydas, director of the National Meteorological Service (EMY)  “temperature will rise from Thursday onward and fluctuate in values above normal levels in the following days.”

Forecast temperatures at the 850 hpa level give the tendency for maximum temperatures above 30°C in the west, central and south of Greece, locally up to 31-32°C and maybe a little higher at the end of the week. However, due to increased cloudiness in many region. temperatures may not be high in all areas.”

At the same time, meteorologist Giorgos Tsatraphyllias forecasts that temperatures will exceed 35 degrees Celsius in some areas of the country as well as significant amounts of Sahara dust.

“The subtropical jet stream (river of air in the upper atmosphere) brings considerable heat with duration, and significant amounts of African dust to our region,” he wrote on social media.

It cannot be ruled out that the increased temperature – 10 to 12 degrees above normal levels – will last until the middle of next week, Tsatraphyllias added.

The areas that will be affected by this wave are initially western and southern Greece with the temperature slightly above 30°C and from Saturday, May 18, onward, temperatures above 35°C are forecast in Crete (mainly ), Viotia, Fthiotida, Achaia, Ilia, Argolida and the Dodecanese.

During the weekend, it will exceed 30 degrees in Attica and 27 in Thessaloniki.

The meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens forecasts even 38° and 39° in estern and western Crete on Friday, May 17, 2024.
