Defense Minister dismisses report “Greece secretly sends armament to Ukraine

Defense Minister Nikos Dendias dismissed on Thursday a newspaper report claiming that Greece is sending “250 containers with armaments in Ukraine” published as front page by Efimerida ton Syntakton (efsyn.gr).

“There is no transfer of armaments to Ukraine, ” Dendias said adding that ” there is a sale of obsolete military equipment to other countries based on relevant agreements.”

The Defense Minister pointed out that “we have not hidden who and what we sell to in the context of the country’s international agreements. We sell obsolete material to the Czech Republic and the USA while saving resources, given that the destruction of this material alone would exceed 100 million euros.”

“A representative of a parliamentary party called me, I explained to her exactly what is happening. I also told her the exact number of containers so we know how many there are. Greece does not give anything directly to Ukraine,” the minister allegedly said.

Following the Minister’s statements, daily efsyn stroke back accusing him of not having read the daily’s report before he dismissed it.

“250 c0ntainers with armament sent secretly to Ukraine”16/05/2024

The military aid that Greece sends as a whole will be contained in the not inconsiderable number of 250 containers! ● Two days ago, the first ones left the station in Kato Gefyra in Northern Greece with the first stop in Romania, after there was a blockade by workers for transshipment at the port ● Concern among the residents of the area about the dangerous cargo ● Prime Minister exposed

Greek arms and ammunition for Ukraine are being transported by rail through Romania. Two days ago, the first wagons left the station in Kato Gefyra, just outside Thessaloniki, causing the residents to question and worry.

All this while last March the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis denied that there were agreements with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for covert aid from Greece to Ukraine.

Before the solution of the station outside Thessaloniki was found, according to information, the Hellenic Train had refused the transfer, while the government also found the port of Thessaloniki “closed” as a transshipment area due to the strong reaction of the workers.

According to information from “Ef.Syn.”, the military aid – in unknown type of ammunition or weapons – which our country sends in total will be contained in the not inconsiderable number of 250 containers! The relevant discussions had started before Easter in the port of Thessaloniki to allocate its space for the transshipment of weapons and ammunition, but they finally ran into an unforeseen factor: the reactions of the workers, who reportedly raised issues of danger , since, among other things, the loads would also have to pass through the city, so they succeeded in preventing them from being transshipped on wires inside the port.

According to the same information, after the problem that arose, the ammunition to be finally transported – in small convoys of trucks that are always accompanied by police forces – to Kato Gefyra outside Agios Athanasios of the Municipality of Chalkidona, in an area where there is an industrial park (covering 1,000 acres ) and where railway lines pass through. In fact, the information directly related to the concern of the residents of these areas, who have experienced the constant movement of large vehicles in recent days, want the ammunition to be handed over to American forces who will transfer it to Romanian wagons, since the next stop of this ammunition is Romania and the Hellenic Train refused to give theirs (after what happened in Tempe there is no need to even explain the reason for the refusal). From there, the weapons and ammunition will be transported back under the responsibility of US forces to Ukraine.

The newspaper recalls the uproar when, after PM Mitsotakis’ visit to Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made posted  on March 21 ” “I spoke with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis about the implementation of our agreements reached during his recent visit to Ukraine, as well as for our continued defense cooperation, particularly in strengthening our air defenses.” ”

The post of the Ukrainian president had caused an uproar and in fact the next day, after the end of the European Council in Brussels, PM. Mitsotakis declared: “No agreement, it is something we have clarified with absolute clarity. It would not be possible for me to go to Ukraine and sign a secret agreement these are not serious things”!

Immediately afterwards, however, in a clearly blurred clarification, he added that “Greece continues to firmly support Ukraine’s ability to defend itself, but without under any circumstances questioning the operational capability of our armed forces”, efsyn stressed.

It calls on the government to clearly answer what kind of weapons or ammunition it is sending to Ukraine and how it is possible when no relevant legislation has passed through the Parliament.

Dendias was reportedly answering to a question posed by an MP of the New Left.
