Fires are sweeping in SW Greece; one dead

A 55-year-old man has died while he was assisting firefighters to extinguish a wildfire in the village Myrtia, Peloponnese, one of the many in central and southern Greece on Friday. It is suggested that the man have died of strong smoke inhalation, an autopsy will determine the exact causes of his death.

The Patras-Pyrgos national highway in Peloponnese was partly shut down near the villages Chanakia and Douneika because due to wildfire burning in neighboring Alpochori. The two villages have been evacuated.

The two villages of Chanakia and Douneika of the Northwestern Peloponnese have been evacuated with an emergency message through 112, and residents have been asked to head toward the city of Pyrgos.

One of the first fires and evacuations on Friday was in Mavro Lithari near Anavyssos along the Athens Riviera. The fire was taken under control in two hours.

Several villages and settlements in Attica, Argolida, Achaia, Arcadia, Messinia and Ilia in Peloponnese as well as in Larissa, Thessaly, central Greece ordered to evacuate as strong winds blowing with intensity of 7 and even 8 Beaufort and gusts reaching 9 B had the blazes out of control.

Over 45 fires broke out within a few hours in Central and Southern Greece, STAR TV reported at 8 p.m.

At the same time, the emergency line <112> sent several alert messages for evacuations with eight of them within less than two hours.

At some point and several hours, the <112> service was out of order as the server was reportedly down.

While in some areas the fires were successfully extinguished, there are currently four large fire fronts in Kranidi, Megalopoli, Messinia and Argolida.


There are reports of houses that have burn down as well as animal pens.

There are reports of fires in the island of Kefalonia, in Agrinio, western Greece, in Livadia and Thiva in Viotia.


Authorities had already warned of the very high risk of fires for Friday, June 21, 2024.

As strong winds will prevail also Saturday, June 22, the Civil Protection has issued again a warning.
