German hiker missing on Crete found dead in ravine

A 67-year-old German hiker who was reported missing on Sunday in Crete has been found dead on Monday. The man was spending vacations with his wife who also alerted authorities about her missing husband.

The man’s body was found in a inaccessible area, in a ravine near Sentoni beach, on a path heading towards Trypti Gorge, on the southern coast of Chania, in Hania prefecture, local media reported.

The man was supposed to go for a hike from Omalos to Sougia.

It was the hiker’s wife who alerted authorities on Sunday saying she had heard no news from her husband, he had left for the hike without taking water with him.

A Search and Rescue operation was launched with the participation of firefighters and rescuers who ultimately located the body through the man’s mobile signal.

It is suggested that the German hiker became disoriented and took the path to Trypiti Gorge.

A helicopter was in the area to recover the body.

The German tourist is the 6th hiker to die in Greece in the month of June.
Still missing on the island of Amorgos is the 59-year-old retired US police officer and two French tourists aged 64 and 73, on the island of Sikinos.
