Five injured when ferry crashes at Folegandros port

Five people were injured when ferry SAONISOS crashed into the port of  Folegandros island during the docking procedure on Sunday morning.

Strong winds were blowing with intensity of 7 to 8 Beaufort when the ferry tried to dock and it crashed at the harbor light, media reported.

According to the Greek Coast Guard, two passengers and three crew members were injured and taken initially to the health center of the island,.

The departure of the ferry has been suspended for safety reasons. A diver is expected to inspect its hull.

Ferry SAONISOS with 24 passengers, 29 crew members, and 7 cars on board, was on a route through the Cyclades islands of Syros-Paros-Naxos-Ios-Sikinos-Folegandros-Thirasia-Thira and Anafi.

There is a major airlift operation underway for the 5 injured who will have to be taken to the hospital of Santorini island as there is no possibility for screening tests on Folegandros.

According to protothema.gr, a Super Puma helicopter of the Air Force will pick up the first 3 injured and take them to Santorini, then return and transfer the other two.

They injured will undergo screening tests and then a C-27 transport plane will transfer them from Santorini to a hospital in Greek capital Athens for treatment, reported in.gr.

PS the incident shows ,if nothing else, the tragic situation of health facilities on the Greek islands that are considered “top destinations” of the heavy industry of the country, the tourism.
