Greece spends over 2% of its GDP for defense, and this is a ticket to survival, National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias told the 28th Annual Economist Government Round table in a panel on Tuesday.
“We are not simply spending. We are reforming,” Dendias said at the conference.
“We call it Agenda 2030, and it will bring the Armed Forces into the 21st century and beyond” in terms of dogmas and through the introduction of technology, he added.
When the reform is completed, he underlined, “Greece will have the strongest Armed Forces it ever had in its history. This will be our contribution to the region’s stability.”
In terms of NATO members, Dendias underlined that “every state must do whatever it can do,” as “we are now in a difficult situation we did not anticipate,” and stressed that the NATO must become something more than it is now. “Not simply a military alliance, but an alliance of principles, to be able to export them to the world. This is NATO’s challenge.”
The conference is taking place July 2-4 at Grand Resort Lagonissi. This year’s topic is “Spiraling through the conflicts in search of opportunities” and Dendias spoke on the panel titled “How can Europe mitigate the current security threats?”
Maybe instead of upgrading over & over again the army spend some on the firebrigade and hospitals
these people might actually believe their own nonsense, that spending billions on whiz-bang toys (and of course making a handful of corporations richer) really does equate to better defense. but it is almost impossible for people totally engrossed in that self-serving world of corruption, to comprehend the real ingredients of a strong _defense_ – an armed and trained population who are motivated to defend their home. that’s the last thing any of these clowns would ever want because they are more afraid of (and have more loathing for) their own population than any foreign power.
the closest thing these people will ever come to ‘strong defense’ is to buy more hundred-million-dollar figther planes and billion-dollar ships that dont even work, and maybe ship off some citizens as cannon fodder to some NATO adventure abroad where we have no business being.
Spot on. Nothing worse for these global dictators then an armed and educated populace.
