The number of deaths rose to 40 and Covid-19 infections apparently decreased the week July 29 – August 4, 2024, Greece’s National Health Care organization EODY said in its weekly report published today, Thursday. the weekly report contains also information about deaths and new infections with the West Nile Virus.

COVID-19 report in detail
Reduced activity of the virus, which causes the Covid-19 infection – after the increasing trend of the last few weeks – was recorded in our country in the last week, from July 29 to August 4, 2024.
The positivity in all tested samples remained stable compared to the previous week. 833 new hospital admissions were recorded showing a decrease. The average weekly number of new admissions over the previous four weeks was 739, and the number of admissions in the corresponding week in 2023 was 469.
The number of new intubations was nine. The average weekly number of new intubations over the previous four weeks was 12 while the number of intubations in the corresponding week of 2023 was eight.
The number of intubated patients with COVID-19 infection is 25.
The number of deaths was 40, from 38 last week. The average weekly number of deaths in the previous four weeks was 34 and the number of deaths in the corresponding week in 2023 was 27.
An increasing trend of BA.2.86 carrying at least one of the F456L and R346T mutations continues to be recorded, with its predominance during the last weeks. It is noted that this category of mutant strains has not been associated with an increased risk of severe disease.
Viral load surveillance in municipal wastewater showed an increase in SARS-CoV-2 virus circulation in six of the ten areas tested.
Vulnerable population groups (elderly and people with underlying diseases) find it difficult to scrupulously follow preventive measures against respiratory infections and to seek medical advice in time for symptoms, in order to be provided with timely treatment.
At the same time, in its weekly report EODY recommended the general population, in the presence of respiratory infection symptoms, to limit contacts with people belonging to vulnerable groups.
West Nile virus
Two additional deaths from West Nile virus have been reported in the past week.
At the same time until yesterday August 7, 2024, the number of declared cases with a laboratory diagnosis of West Nile virus infection, with and without manifestations from the Central Nervous System (CNS) in Greece country had also increased.
During the last week, 22 new domestic cases were diagnosed/reported.
Since the beginning of 2024, the number of recorded cases has reached 55 and the deaths related to West Nile virus have reached 8.
Note that two days ago, health authorities warned citizens of the West Nile Virus, an infection caused by mosquitoes, especially those who live in regions with the most infections.
