British expat attempts to kill wife in south Athens. Arrest

An 87-year-old British national was arrested in Palaio Faliro, suburb of south Athens, on charges of attempting to kill his wife.

The man is accused of trying to suffocate his 89-year-old bed-ridden wife with a pillow.

The victim was transported to Tzaneio General Hospital in Piraeus, where she is currently receiving treatment.

ANT1 TV reported that the British national’s first word to police were “What I did I did it because my wife asked me so!”

According to media information, the elderly man put a pillow on his wife’s face and then caught her neck and tried to suffocate her.

Thinking his wife was dead, he exited the couple’s apartment and went to another one in the same building where he informed a neighbor, a friend.

The woman in shock about what she heard called the police.

Arriving at the apartment the officers found the woman alive and called the ambulance.

The couple has been facing health issues with the wife’s situation to have worsened in recent times. The husband has reportedly also some health problems including dementia.

The wife, also a British national, appears to confirm her husband’s statement that she asked him to relief her.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
