A big wildfire has been raging in Platanias by Chania on the island of Crete on Wednesday. The fire broke out around 4 o’ clock in the afternoon in grassland and in an area with reeds near hotels and very close to the houses of the village.
At 6 o’ clock late in the afternoon, residents and tourists in Platanias by Chania on the islands of Crete received an alert message via emergency line <112> urging them to evacuate westward in the direction of Gerani through the old national road.

Dense smoke from the burning reeds is visible from afar.
According to state broadcaster ERT, next to several houses also at least two hotels and a big supermarket in the area gave been evacuated.
Local media zarpanews.gr reported that the blaze has already caused damages to houses and house yards.
The fire brigade has reportedly surrounded the back side of one of the hotels and according to the head of Civil Protection for the Region of Crete Giorgos Tsapakos, “at that exact point where the hotel is concerned, the fire is under control and I believe that there is no great danger.”
