Fire in Athens ISAP train: panicked passengers jump off (VID)

Dozens of passengers of Athens urban train ISAP panicked on Wednesday afternoon when the wagons were filled with smoke.

The train stopped, passengers opened the doors with their own hands, got off jumping out of the wagons and started walking on the tracks and next to them to the nearest station.

Passengers complained to media, that here was no relevant information from the train managers to give the necessary evacuation instructions.

According to some complaints, passengers saw flames coming from underneath the wagons, pulled the emergency break that halted the train, opened the doors and jumped off.

The incident occurred between the stations “Eirinis” and Neratziotissa.”

“We saw flames coming from both sides of our wagons, we opened the doors and jumped out, some were fragile and elderly, they risked their lives,” a passenger told ANT1 TV.

She and other passengers complained further that when they got off on the track, no personnel was around to instruct them what to do, “we did not know whether there was electricity on the tracks, whether another train was coming from the other side.”

According to a statement issued by the managing company STASY, “the power supply to the line was interrupted by the driver and the control center and the trains were evacuated. Passengers headed to the nearest stations, while the trains were stopped.”

President of the ISAP workers, Leonidas Georgopoulos, told newsit.gr that “when the incident happened, and the train driver noticed the flames, he gave the order to interrupt the electrification of the lines”.

Some private television channels reported that it was the pine needles on the rail tracks that got fire due to electricity.

Accidents with trains, whether urban, suburban or intercity ones seem to be a normal condition at least once a week.

Traffic in the ISAP/Metro Line 1 has been fully restored.
