A servicer fund sent a locksmith and the state deployed strong police forces to evict a 90-year-old woman who is currently hospitalized after a serious surgery. The evicted apartment is the main residence of the woman who lives there with her son.
The cruel incident took place in Zografou suburb of Athens at 7 o’ clock on Tuesday morning.
Nobody was in the apartment and the locksmith could not open the door, though, so the eviction of the old woman allegedly did not proceed today.
The 90-year-old woman was living in the apartment with her son who has been suffering from psychological problems, media reported. She had recently underwent a surgery and has been hospitalized ever since.
“Another neighbor informed me that riot police and other officers were downstairs. I went down and saw the locksmith trying to open the door but it wouldn’t,” a friend of the elderly woman told ANT1 TV.
“I started shouting and telling them that what they are doing is not right, asking them if the family has been notified. They replied that it had not been informed, so I went down and saw a situation that only happens when they were hunting on November 17,” the friend added.
According to news website koutitispandoras.gr , the family had not been notified neither for the auction nor for the eviction order.
An online call to mobilize citizens of the area to hinder the eviction was out and many, including members of solidarity groups rushed to the neighborhood.
The Mayor of Zografou, Tina Kathatsaki, told ANT1 TV that had been informed by the residents about the eviction noting “we have a group of volunteers in the Municipality to support borrowers. I notified the lawyers and the volunteers so that we can also see that the family is supported from a legal point of view.”
She stated she wasn’t aware about the progress of the procedure adding that maybe the apartment lock was changed and therefore the locksmith could not open it.
By 10 o’ clock the locksmith had changed the lock altogether, 901.gr reported. the website added that due to her serious health problems the 90-year-old owner has been accommodated by her daughter.
There were strong reactions by the communist party KKE and left-wing New Left who lashed out at the government allowing such “shameful” actions to take place.
