One man was killed and one woman was seriously injured following an explosion in an apartment in Ambelokipoi district of central Athens on Thursday afternoon.
The dead man was renting the apartment in the third floor of the multi-storey residential building, while there is no information about the woman’s identity. Both were over 65 years old.
The woman has been transported to the nearest hospital with burn injuries.
According to initial media reports, the explosion was caused by a gas bottle. However, no gas bottle has been detected by the firefighters who rushed to the area, state broadcaster ERT reported.
The explosion occurred a few minutes before 3 p.m. and reportedly brought down the outer and one inner wall of the apartment, while debris fell on cars parked on the street.
Four fire trucks and twelve firefighters arrived at the scene to evacuate the building.
It is unclear where there have been additional injuries either in the building or on the street.
The fire department investigates the causes of the explosion and the possibility that the gas leak was caused by the central or individual system.
