Extreme bullying in Athens school: Student trapped inside gutter

A case of extreme and dangerous bullying of a 12-year-old student in a high school of Nea Ionia suburb of western Athens. The student was pressed by older school boys to get inside a rainwater drainage hole in the courtyard and they placed the heavy iron lid on him.

The incident took place on Monday morning when the majority of students abstained from classes due to ongoing protests.

The 12-year-old victim was in the school courtyard when he was approached by a 14-year-old boy accompanied by some others of the same age.

The minors told the 12-year-old that there was a 5 euro note inside the gutter and he should pick it up.

There they convinced him to enter the well and when the 12-year-old entered, they trapped him there by closing the lid.

Two female teachers who were in the yard, when they saw the group of boys and rushed to check what was going on. One of them removed the lid with the help of other students and released the victim from the dangerous trap.

“When the child went in, they told him go further down, down, my son reached the bottom and then they closed the lid,” the victim’s father told Mega TV Live News on Thursday, adding that the boy started screaming.

“If it wasn’t for the teacher, my son would have stayed in the gutter with the mice all day,” the father said with a broken voice about the bullying his son suffered. “My son wasn’t friends with these kids, they didn’t hang out together,” he added.

“The school management did not even bother to infirm us,” the father underlined saying that he was briefed about the brutal incident by his older son when he returned from school.

When also the victim returned home and told the parents what had happened, together with the younger son the father went to police and filed a complaint against the perpetrators, the teachers and the principal.

Police arrested the two teachers on the charge of exposing a minor to danger, while the principal of the high school was arrested later.

The 14-year-old boy, who was identified by the 12-year-old victim, was also arrested on charges of illegal detention outside his home.

However, by order of the prosecutor, both the 14-year-old and the teachers and the principal were released.

Greece has seen an outbreak of bullying and violence among school children in and outside education facilities in the last two years, but the Education system lacks measures to prevent them and educate the children of secondary and even primary education on the issue.
