Earthquake rattles Lesvos with 5.1R; Landslides, schools closed

A strong earthquake rattled with a magnitude of 5.1 Richter the island of Lesvos at 10:38 on Tuesday night, causing concern among residents and landslides on the road network between Argenos and Vafios.

The epicenter was located North-East of Mithymna and had a focal depth of 14 km.

No injuries have been reported or material damage.

The road where the landslide occurred has been closed on Wednesday, while efforts are underway to remove the rocks.

Schools of all levels in the municipal units of Mantamados, Mithymna and Petra of the Municipality of West Lesvos will remain closed on Wednesday, January 22, in order to inspect the school buildings. According to Mayor of West Lesvos Taxiarchis Verros, “there is no report of damage to the schools, but we are proceeding with an inspection of the schools for precautionary reasons.”

The earthquake was felt also on the neighboring islands of Chios and Limnos. the western parts of Turkey as well as in Kos and some areas on Thrace.

Seismologists are monitoring the phenomenon, with Efthymios Lekkas, the head of the Greek Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization to reassure than the aftershock activity is normal.

Speaking to media, Lekkas stressed that the earthquake occurred in the underwater area but close to the land and that they investigate the relation of the fault line with others in the area. “We’ll have a clear picture after 48 hours,” he stressed.

Seismologists stress that the earthquake appears to have the same characteristics as the seismic activity of January 7, 2023.
