Erdogan: Cyprus has two states. The international community…

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated the fixed position of Ankara that “Cyprus has two states” and that the international community should reconcile itself to “this reality.” Erdogan’s statements come a few days after the five-party meeting on the Cyprus issue in New York under the auspices of the United Nations.

Speaking at the 51st anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern Cyprus in 1974, Erdogan stressed that Turkey “is and always will be present” in Cyprus.

Erdogan also expressed his support for Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar saying that the time had come for the international community to reconcile itself to “the reality on the ground,” that is, the existence of two states.

He reportedly added that the international community should forge diplomatic and economic ties with the illegally occupied north, that is the so-called “TRNC”, claiming that its non-recognition is “unfair,” while “the Turkish-Cypriots suffered a lot of injustice for decades.”

For one more time, Erdogan reiterated the same Turkish narrative since 1974 that the invasion was a “peace operation.”

  1. When the international community is successful at making 2 states in the middle east, then they can move to Cyprus. Oh, and pigs will fly by then!
