Six archaeological sites in Athens closed during midday until July 27

The Athens Antiquities Ephorate on Friday announced that from 25 July until 27 July, 2025, the archaeological sites of the Acropolis and Klityon, Olympion, Lyceum, Roman Agora, Ancient Agora and Adrian’s Library will remain closed between 12 o’ clock noon and 5 p.m. due to the high temperatures.

The measure aims for the safety and protection of staff and visitors, the Culture Ministry said in a statement.

With a prolonged and extreme heatwave hitting Greece with over 40 degrees Celsius since July 20, culture authorities had decided to close major archaeological sites in Athens during the peak hours of the heat July 22-25. As the heatwave is now forecast to last until Sunday, the temporary closure has been extended.

Some TV channels have already reported of fainting incidents while tourists were waiting to visit archaeological sites.
