Improved conditions in most wildfires fronts in Greece on Sunday

The situation has improved in most of the areas affected by the  wildfires  on Sunday morning, following an all-night battle by firefighters, volunteers, locals and municipality crews.

Strong ground and aerial forces continue to operate on Sunday across all wildfire zones that broke out on Saturday in Greece, with the most significant of which were in Attica, Evia, Kythira, Messinia, and Chania, causing damage to properties, forest and agricultural land, killing thousands of animals in farms, and wildlife.

According to the Fire Service, in Attica, the fire that broke out yesterday in Drosopigi and Kryoneri currently has no active front. However, firefighting forces remain on high alert due to the risk of flare-ups.

A flare-up has just occurred in the wildfire at Pissonas, Evia. Ground firefighting forces have encircled the area, while aerial units are conducting water drops in an effort to contain and extinguish the new blaze.  Α new message was sent via the emergency number 112  urging residents of the Pissonas settlement to evacuate and head toward Kathenous.

On Kythira, firefighting forces continue their battle against the flames with locals complaining that the firefighting force did not arrive in time and claiming “half of the island has burned down.”

Firefighting operations also continue in Polythea, Messinia, where dozens of firefighters and volunteers, aerial means, water tankers, and construction machinery have done their best to contain the blaze.

The picture is better in Temenia, Chania, however the firefighting forces are addressing scattered pockets inside the perimeter of the fire.

Regarding the wildfire in Molai, Lakonia, according to the Fire Department, crews are tackling scattered flames within the perimetre of the fire.

Hundreds of firefighters, volunteers and locals have been battling against the flames with the support of municipality water tankers and construction machinery as well as with air-dropping aircraft and helicopters, with the last two to operate only during the daylight.

The strong winds have weakened as of Sunday afternoon so that firefighting forces could bring better results.

Meanwhile, the Fire Service has arrested three Greeks on Saturday for casing fires by negligence, however, not the big fires mentioned above.

For the fire in NE Attica, a TV channel reported that there was strong evidence the fire in Kryoneri/Drosopigi was cause by a short-circuit in a power pole with the sparkles to have started the blaze.
