Israeli Embassy dismisses claims of “staff evacuation” in Athens

The Israeli Embassy in Athens has dismissed claims of Israeli media that embassy staff had been evacuated due to protests in the Greek capital.

The Israeli Embassy in Greece categorically denies recent media reports claiming that Embassy staff have evacuated their residences,” the embassy said in a statement.

“These reports are false and baseless,” it added.

We urge the media to verify information from official sources before publication, in order to prevent misinformation and unnecessary public concern,” it concluded.

The claims were published in Israel two days ago by media Israel Hayom. In its Hebrew edition and on its social media, Hayom claimed “the Israeli embassy decided to ask “embassy personnel in Greece to evacuate their residences in Athens due to the situation in the country.”

The claims referred to the argument between the Israeli Ambassador  Noam Katz and Athens Mayor Haris Doukas and to “escalating anti-Israeli protests” including the recent pro-Palestinian protests during the arrival of Israeli-flagged cruise ship to Greek islands and “a planned Action Day” against  the genocide in Gaza on August 10.

Daily ethnos.gr noted that earlier Israeli media and the Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu reported that the Israeli embassy in Athens was being evacuated due to protests planned on August 10. Shortly afterwards, they corrected their articles, stating that it was an “isolated act.” The Turkish agency’s report, however, emphasized that there has been no official announcement from the Israeli or the Greek sides.
