Greece sends firefighting aircraft and manpower to assist in the extinguishing operations of the large forest fires raging in Spain and Portugal, the country’s Civil Protection said on Thursday.
Two Canadair CL-415 firefighting aircraft are being sent to Portugal immediately and reinforce the aerial firefighting operations.
At the same time, Greece has offered a group of infantrymen (GFFF), consisting of 20 Forestry Commandos of the Special Forestry Operations Units (E.M.O.D.E.), destined for Spain, which was accepted by the Spanish authorities.
The deployment through the European Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) is in the spirit of solidarity and mutual support towards the affected countries, the Greek Civil Protection sad in a statement.
