The Nisyros Geopark was officially added to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network during the most recent session of the international organization.
The application dossier of Nisyros Geopark for inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network was submitted in November 2021, with the scientific support of collaborators from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Professor Paraskevi Nomikou and Professor Panagiotis Nastos) and the International Hellenic University (Professor Dimitrios Emmanouloudis). Supplementary information was submitted in January 2025 for the final evaluation of the Geopark.

The area of the Nisyros Geopark has been formed for thousands of years by both geological forces and human activities. Located in the southeastern part of the Aegean Sea, Nisyros Geopark stands out for its untouched volcanic-shaped relief that travels visitors back to its spectacular past. The natural environment includes extraordinary species of flora and fauna which make the geopark’s biodiversity unique.
in a press release the Mayor of Nisyros, Christofis Koroneos, noted “this international recognition represents a landmark moment for our island, highlighting not only the unique natural and cultural wealth of Nisyros, but also the significance of the surrounding islets of Pergousa, Pachia, Kondeliousa, and Strongyli, as well as the marine area between them, which form an integral part of the Geopark. Together they compose a rare geological mosaic, unique in the world, opening the way for further protection and promotion of the site.”
Koroneos added that “this is an opportunity to ensure that the natural beauty and geological heritage of our island will remain intact, while at the same time creating sustainable development prospects for the local community. It is also a great responsibility, as it confirms the need to implement strict and comprehensive strategies for the conservation and protection of Nisyros’ natural environment, geological formations, and cultural heritage.”
Nisyros Geopark is a living laboratory of natural processes, with unique geological formations and landscapes shaped by volcanic activity.
