Extreme weather to affect Greece with heavy storms and gale-force winds

Greek meteorologists warn of an extreme weather change with dangerous storms and rainfalls, a high risk of flooding phenomena in at least 8 regions, and gale-force winds that may affect sailing in the Aegean Sea over the weekend.

The dangerous weather phenomena are expected in the coming days, as the weather will change significantly from Friday, September 26, as strong winds and heavy storms are forecast.

In a post on Facebook, meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis speaks of gale-force winds as well as heavy and continuous rainfalls.

He notes that “as of this afternoon, a strong pressure gradient is developing towards the Aegean Sea, resulting in a significant strengthening of the northerly winds, which between Friday and Saturday will approach storm levels in intensity, with an emphasis on the central and northern parts of our Aegean Sea (thus increasing possibilitis of a sailing ban.)”.

He added that “from the midday – afternoon hours of Saturday, a barometric low will develop towards the central – southern Ionian Sea, which will be significantly strengthened by the warm seas with which it is expected to interact. This means that in many areas west of the Pindos mountain range, long-lasting, fed-back storms will develop, which are capable of producing extremely high rainfall levels.”

He emphasizes that: “The fact that the storms will be active for many hours, constantly fed by the sea areas there, unable to dissipate further east due to the barometric arrangement that is expected to form (estimated duration of more than 24 hours) is worrying.”

He strssed that the risk of flooding episodes is significantly increasing.

Western Greece regions mostly affected by storm

Another meteorologist, Giorgos Tsatraphyllias, also spoke of heavy rainfalls and storms, noting that strong storms are coming in the West and stormy northerly winds in the East of the country.

He speaks of eight areas that will be mostly affacted by the storms:

In the front line of danger from strong storms: Ilia, Achaia, and Messinia in Peloponnese, Zakynthos from Sunday morning.

-On the second line: Kefalonia-Ithaca, Arcadia, Aitoloakarnania.

-Also risk of problems in coastal shipping mainly in the central and northern Aegean on Friday and Saturday.

-From Saturday the temperature drops noticeably by 6-8 degrees Celsius.

Note that the national Meteorological Service EMY has not issued any Weather Warning yet, on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
