Vorizia shooting: Three fugitive brothers surrender to police

Three brothers, fugitive since Saturday from the village Vorizia where the fatal shooting between two rival families took place, surrendered to police on Tuesday.

The three Frangiadakis brothers turned themselves in reportedly following pressure from older family members and consultation with their legal representatives.

The three men aged 19, 27 and 29, had been hiding in a village about 20 minutes from Vorizia, from where they were picked up by a police patrol car, and transported them to Heraklion.

On Wednesday morning, they will be brought before the investigating magistrate.

Arrest warrants on charges of homicide and attempted homicide have already been issued against them.

The massive shooting between members of the two families Frangiadakis and Kargakis who were armed with Kalashnikov firearms and fired blindly at people and houses killed two people, each from one family .

More than a dozen people were hospitalized some with serious injuries. Among those hospitalized are also two men suspected of being actively involved in the shooting.

Strong police forces managed to enter the village and halt the shooting and more forces were deployed from Athens.

Police investigation has proved difficult due to the “omerta”, the code of silence that prevails among families in Crete.

While some residents have reportedly already left Vorizia out of fear of a revenge shooting, authorities suspended the school operation throughout the week in order to protect the local children, as they said.

The two families have been in rivalry for long time, local media reported, but the reason for this dispute still remains quite unclear, even though there is strong suspicion that the one family was struggling for power claiming large plots in the village forbidding anyone else to purchase or build a house without their permission.
What initially the shooting was described as “vendetta”it slowly appears to be rather the punishment of one family by the other for daring to construct a house in its area.
Now, there are reportedly efforts in the village by elderly and respected people in the area to settle the issue between the two families through negotiations (Σασμός) once for all.
The case of massive shooting between two rival families that seems to have emerged from two centuries ago has shocked not only the Greek society but also the Cretan one.
“Not all of us , Cretan, are criminals,” locals say and call on authorities to stop turning a bling eye to the illegal firearms and activities for which Crete has become famous for.
There are 500 permanent residents in Vorizia and currently 400 police officers to prohibit a new wave of death.
