Storm Adel floods Athens with just 40mm of rain (videos)

Storm Adel: Huge amounts of rainwater accompanied by furiously falling hail balls hit the Greek capital Athens in the early morning hours of Friday flooding main roads and creating chaos in short time.

Mostly hit by storm weather “Adel” were the south suburbs of Faliro and Alimos that led to flooding of parts of the main avenue Poseidonos along the Athens Riviera and Vouliagmenis.

Commuters had to drive to work in adverse weather conditions, some found their vehicles buried under uprooted trees and some were trapped in the flushing waters.

Others like those who used public transport means had to climb on pick trucks or clarks provided by municipal authorities in order to be able to cross the flooded street, as in the case of Mochato station of urban train ISAP.

Houses and businesses were flooded and the Fire Service was busy to cut and remove trees, pump waters and bring people to safety.

In the end of the day, it turned out that the volume of water that fell from the sky was not even that big. Just 40 millimeters.

As the former director of the National Meteorological Service EMY, Thodoris Kolydas, noted in a post where he explained why Athens was flooded with just 40 millimeters of rain on Friday morning:

“Dense construction, small streams and minimal absorption are the factors capable of creating flooding phenomena in Athens. This number was enough to cause local accumulations of water, traffic delays, small floods on roads that are difficult to drain.”

He emphasized, “it is not an exaggeration to say that Athens was “flooded” with 40 millimeters of rain.”

He also noted citing data from the meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens that flooding phenomena occurred in areas such as Zografou and Goudi, where the amount of rain exceeded 38–39 millimeters.

Schools in six municipalities in northern Athens and islands of the Saronic Gulf were closed on Friday for precautionary reasons.

PS Reality confirms for one more time an old Greek proverb “Πνιγήκαμε σε μια κουταλιά νερό!” – “We’re drowned in a spoon full of water.”

Publish! Such important new findings should be shared with the world! Don’t forget to add buried streams and rivers, lack of natural landcover and healthy soil. Athens is a concrete monstrosity and much more of this is coming. Brace yourselves!
