Fifty long-distance buses (KTEL) schedules running between Athens and Thessaloniki were cancelled on Thursday due to the complete blocking of roads by farmers and animal breeders, the Thessaloniki KTEL managers announced.
Their decision followed information by the General Police Directorate of Thessaly that all alternative routes from Thessaloniki to Athens were blocked by protesting farmers.
No ticket holder will lose their tickets, Thessaloniki KTEL said, and directions on reimbursements, changes of travel dates, and related issues would be issued in coming days.
Speaking to Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), Thessaloniki KTEL SA President Stefanos Tsolis noted that a total of 50 schedules take place between Athens and Thessaloniki on a daily basis. He warned that if farmers and animal breeders continue their mobilizations on Friday (Jan. 9), as they have said they would, then those schedules may also have to be cancelled.
Additionally in Macedonia, Pella KTEL announced in social media on Thursday that its own northern Greece schedules to and from Thessaloniki would continue, despite temporary traffic restrictions in Chalkidona. However, it added that Friday’s (Jan. 9) schedules to and from Ioannina, Kozani and Ptolemaida were cancelled, as were those buses serving Volos, Larissa, Katerini, and Alexandria.
UPDATE: Late on Thursday, KTEL Management in Thessaloniki announced that (KTEL) schedules between Athens and Thessaloniki will run as usual on Friday, January 9.
