Ten Greek-flagged vessels with 85 Greek seafarers in the Persian Gulf

Ten Greek-flagged vessels with 85 Greek seafarers are in the Persian Gulf, five are outside, while a total of around 325 vessels linked to Greece but flying foreign flags are in the wider area, Maritime & Insular Policy Minister Vasilis Kikilias said on Monday.

“All seafarers are in good health,” the minister said.

Without elaborating on details, the Minister said that one Greek-flagged vessel was hit.

The Strait of Hormuz closed to traffic

In an interview with Skai TV, Kikilias described the targeting of seafarers as “unacceptable”, emphasizing that ocean-going shipping should remain outside war conflicts-something that, unfortunately, is not confirmed by reality.

Stressing that the developments directly affect international shipping and, by extension, the global economy, explaining that approximately 20% of the world’s oil and 20% to 25% of natural gas pass through the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting its significance and the potential impact on global economic activity.

He warned that any closure of the Strait of Hormuz would have enormous economic repercussions for shipping and global trade, pointing out that all vessels still heading toward the region are staying outside the Strait.

He emphasized that the primary priority of the Greek government remains the protection of Greeks in the area.

In a post on X on Sunday, Kikilias wrote that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy is continuously monitoring developments in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

“The Operations Center is in constant communication with companies that have Greek vessels in the region, providing instructions and recommendations and informing the shipping community about developments. We are at heightened operational readiness and are doing whatever is required to ensure the maximum possible protection of Greek shipping and Greek seafarers.”

It should be recalled that from Saturday to Monday, Iran has struck a total of 5 vessels attempting to enter the Stair of Hormuz.
