Meteo warning of Hazardous Weather Phenomena in Greece

Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued an emergency bulletin of Hazardous Weather Phenomena (RED ALERT) on Monday, warnig of heavy rainfalls and storms of long duration, possibly also with local hail falls, snow and stormy winds of up to 10 Beaufort.

A weather system in the western Mediterranean, named ERMINIO (as named by the Italian Meteorological Service – Central Mediterranean Group), moving southeast, is expected to affect most areas of Greece on Wednesday and Thursday, April 1-2, 2026.

Forecast are 02-04-26 with long-lasting and intense rains and storms and possibly with local hail.

On Wednesday, easterly southeasterly winds of intensity 8 to 9 Beaufort will blow in the eastern part of the country and locally in the Dodecanese islands with 10 Beaufort.

Heavy snowfalls will occur on Wednesday in the mountainous areas of Epirus and Macedonia.

EMY Weather Warning

A. Wednesday, April 1, the above weather system creates a surface low in Libya that moves rapidly north-northeast.

Heavy rains and storms are expected:

a. In the Ionian islands from the early morning hours (orange warning).
b. In the eastern Peloponnese, eastern Sterea, Evia, Thessaly and Sporades from the pre-lunar hours until late at night (red warning).
c. In Attica from the pre-lunar hours until evening (red warning).
d. In the Cyclades (mainly in the north) and the islands of the Eastern Aegean (from the island of Chios and further south) from the afternoon until late at night (orange warning).
e. In the Dodecanese from the afternoon (red warning).

B. Thursday, April 2, heavy rains and storms are expected:

a. In the western and southern Peloponnese from the morning hours until late at night (red warning).
b. In eastern Thessaly (regional units of Larissa, Magnesia including the Sporades) from the early hours until noon (orange warning).
c. In the regional units of Central Macedonia: Pieria, Imathia, Halkidiki and Serres from the morning hours until late at night (orange warning).
d. In Crete (mainly in the west and south) from the midday hours until late at night (red warning).
e. In the Eastern Aegean islands from late afternoon (orange warning).
f. In the Dodecanese in the early hours of the day (red warning) and again from late afternoon (orange warning)
