Public transport, trains, ferries on 24h strikes, work-stoppages on Labor Day, May 1

Workers at public transport means, trains and suburban railway (Proastiakos) participate with traditional 24-hour strikes and work stoppages in the strike mobilizations for Labor Day, May 1.

At the same time, ferries and ships remain docked at the Greek ports.

The strike has been decided by the private sector union umbrella GSEE.

On 24-hour strike are:

  • fixed-track transport means such as the Metro, Proastiakos, urban train ISAP and the Tram.
  • the entire railway network of the country will also be immobilized, including suburban lines.

Work stoppages are staged by workers at buses and trolleybuses that will operate between 9:00-21:00 only.

Ships and ferries will be on 24-hour strike from 00:01 on Friday until midnight on the same day.

Transport workers demand:

  • public, safe, modern, reliable urban transport that meets the needs of workers and passengers
  • substantial wage increases, guaranteed through Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) and not through government benefits-perks
substantial measures against punctuality and profiteering
reopening of the railway network throughout Greece and full restoration of the infrastructure – facilities that were affected by the natural disasters, ensuring the safety of workers and passengers with modern, functional and constantly monitored systems as well as continuous training of staff
  • permanent recruitment of staff to cover fixed and ongoing needs.

There will be 76 protest rallies throughout Greece, also in downtown Athens.
