Greece to regulate use of e-scooters after multiple accidents by minors (POLL)

Greece plans to legislate in order to regulate the use of electric scooters after multiple accidents by minors in the last couple of days that included the death of an 13-year-old boy.

The plan was revealed by Citizen Protection Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis in an interview with Mega TV on Tuesday morning.

“We are trying to see what is happening in other European capitals as well. Scooters exist everywhere. The Traffic Police are trying to impose rules, such as helmets, speed limits, etc. Unfortunately, however, there is the issue of minors,” the minister stressed.

He noted that the regulation that is being promoted that will prohibit minors from using electric scooters on the road network, allowing their use only in pedestrian zones and squares.

“A minor cannot and should not be riding a scooter on the road. It is very dangerous,” he emphasized, pointing out the risks arising from riding on major avenues without adequate protection.

The minister placed particular emphasis on children’s safety, noting that “it is a shame for children to lose their lives on the roads because of scooters.

He added that without special infrastructure, such as dedicated lanes, the risks remain high.

In less than a week, from April 29 to May 4, one 13-year-old boy was killed and four other minors, aged 12, 13, 15 and 16, were injured in Peloponnese in accidents with e-scooters.

The 12-year-old girl was hit by a scooter that broke her a leg and had to undergo surgery. The girl was playing with friends in a square.

A 13-year-old boy suffered head injuries in an accident with his scooter, while the two boys, 15 and 16, got injured while they were driving on a busy road on the same scooter.

NO exception are also adults, with a 4o-year-old man in Crete to have been injured while he was driving intoxicated a scooter at high speed and without a helmet. he is hospitalized in ICU with heavy head injuries.

According to Greek Police, 109 accidents with e-scooters were recorded in 2025, with two of them to have ended deadly for their users.

PS In my humble opinion and especially for minors there should be a very low speed limit, helmet obligation and a heavy fine for parents. But mostly an age limit, not use for under 15, for example 🙂

  1. I agree with Dswn. ban them. they are dangerous to other road users at any speed. Many have no lights, are driven tgrough traffic lights, wrong way diwn the street and used by drunks as an alternative to walking. Any parent allowing a juvenile to have one of these should be prosecuted for child endangerment. Shame on them and their non existent concern for the safety of their child and every other road user

  2. These are lethal machines, in our village Lardos, Rhodes, kids from ages 5/6 upwards some even 3 up on them and driver on mobile phone,. No road sense, coming down wrong side of road, crossing and not stopping at the junctions, going faster than we do in our car, or myself on my petrol scooter. There will be a death and then the parents will be in uproar, everybody elses fault, not theirs for supplying these death machines. Sick of it, BAN THEM

  3. No one under the age of 21 should have, owners should hold a license, and some sort of test before license is issued

  4. We have too many of them here in Toronto. Am told that immigrants are told they can buy one and get work as a delivery person because they don’t require a license. Also, they can’t drive in the bike lanes because of motors and they can’t go on the sidewalks because of motors – so they need to be on the road, but they DON’T do that as they say it’s too scary. I agree with the comments by others. I think they should curb Uber too; apparently we have 96,000 ubers on the road. Oversaturated market – they don’t make money any more.
