That was a tough day for the Greek coalition government of Lucas Papademos. Most of all it was tough for socialist party PASOK that saw three deputies and two ministers resign over the austerity measures. Fifteen to twenty MPs declared that they will not vote in favor of the Memorandum of Understanding 2 and the new austerity package. No MP has resigned from conservative Nea Dimokratia, but party-leader Antonis Samaras heard 13 MP declaring they will not vote in favor either.
In an effort to combat rebellion within their parties, Papandreou and Samaras imposed ‘voting in accordance with the party line”. Papandreou made it clear “Anyone voting against it, will see immediately the exit door”. Samaras said it similarly “Those voting against won’t be on the voting list at the next elections.” Moreover Samaras said today that he “will push for elections after the PSI is complete.”
In third coalition partner LAOS things are even more dramatic. Karatzaferis withdrew his four ministers from the government on Friday, at least one of them told him on Saturday, he would vote for the measures.
Papademos coalition government has 250 seats in Parliament out of 300. There are estimations that the unpopular bill will pass with 200 votes. The night is long though and more rebels can raise their voices against the bill until Sunday afternoon.
The bill contains painful measures for the society like -22% decreases in the minimum wages, an even -32% decrease for young professionals until 25, elimination of labour rights.
A government reshuffle is to take place on Monday. Maybe even a totally new coalition government….
