A powerful earthquake with magnitude 5.3 R shattered Greece in the early morning hours of Tuesday. The earthquake occurred at 04.09 am and its epicenter was in the sea 26 km North-West from Chalkida on the island of Euboia. It occurred in a depth of 13 km.
There have been no reports of human injuries or material damages. However, the tremor was quite powerful and on the surface and was felt not only in the nearby areas but also in Athens (78 km away) and even Corinth (some 150 km away.)
Chalkida residents told media that “they jumped out of their beds” and that “everything was shaking”. they had the sense that the tremor “lasted for quite a long time.”
Two Greek seismologists (Tselentis, Chouliaras) seem unsure whether it was a main earthquake.
PS KTG in Athens can confirm Chalkida residents: bed was shaking, sense it was quite long. Cat woke up, jumped out of the bed and run away… I think it was the first time she had such a reaction.
