Lesvos – Refugee Crisis: Christmas Tree made of life-jackets

Volunteer and rescuers in Moria village on the Greek island of Lesvos had an original idea: a Christmas tree made of life-jackets, a small Santa on the top instead of a Star. and there it stands the Christmas tree of Moria to remind the hundreds of thousands of refugees who escaped war and landed to Greece trying to reach Europe for a better future.

According to the Greek Coast Guard, more than 100,000 people have been rescued since the beginning of 2015. Of those 17,000 were women and children.

More than 800,000 people have arrived in Greece in the period of time January- 22. December 2015. Around 3,500 men, women and children lost their life in the waters of the Eastern Aegean Sea.

The boats carrying refugees form Turkey to Greece keep coming despite the winter weather conditions.

    • I think an explanation may be that places in safer boats are preferred for women and children, and younger men are taking risks that others avoid.

    • I understand, ‘rescued’ in terms of ‘picked up from the sea and boatwrecks’ while the others arrived safe.
