Costa Coffee to Close its Shops in Greece

Costa Coffee, the well-known British company puts the padlock to its ten coffee shops in Greece. According to economic news portal Capital.gr, the Greek representative “The Greek Coffee Company SA” will close its shops in several suburbs of the Athens including those in downtown.

Company representatives confirmed to Capital.gr that the project was not sustainable anymore despite efforts to continue the operation. The Costa Coffee shops started to operate in Greece since. 2007.

PS It looks that Costa Coffee did not drop its prices for coffee lovers suffering under the harsh economic crisis. I read of prices of 3.50 euro for a freddo espresso to go. When meanwhile the Greek competition sells all kinds of coffee to go for one euro. I wonder if Starbucks made some price decreases. It’s austerity time, guys!

        • hehe (for 2. part) I think he is in fincancial troubles, not?
if one gives names his enemies will give his name too.
but such tax allegations are rather cheap in this contect.

          • Oh yes, he probably is. Although it depends of course if he is a member of one of the Big Families in Greece. Then his losses will be just a tax write off that will make money.
And yes, he hang if he would kiss and tell. But somehow I do believe that there is some truth in his assertion.

  1. Using perfectly legal, but highly immoral tax avoidance schemes, here in the UK Starbucks has paid no UK corporation tax in the last three years, despite reporting sales of £1.2bn.

  2. I think people who drinks lot os expensive coffee should try an experiment in Greece and elsewhere, to give up a few cups of expensive coffee a month and donate it to a fund maybe called “The coffee drinkers’ charity fund” or anything people with better imaginations than me can think of. It could be used to run charities for a few less cups a month would have no major impact on those who drink lots of expensive coffee while the collective money from these individuals would have a big impact on those getting the charity. In Greece it could be used to run anti-suicide programs for one thing.

  3. Am I the only person who has NEVER bought a coffee anywhere??? I have a coffee in the morning before work and again in the afternoon – I can’t imagine shelling out money to buy coffees!!! Now … ouzo is worth paying for!
