German Frigates in Crete to assist Libya surveillance

Three German frigates sailed today at the port of Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete, local news portal Cretalivereported. The frigates came from the port of Alexandria in Egypt and carry 670 Marines. They are expected to stay in Crete for at least one week. The ships are on standby and will conduct patrols in the Mediterranean basin. Furthermore they will be in contact with the radars at the air force base of Ziros and the base at Souda bay and they will sail closer to Libya should this be necessary.

Local branch of  Greek Communist Party (KKE) denounced the presence of the frigates saying in characteristic good old communist terminology “Obviously the frigates are integrated into the imperialist plans of USA and NATO for immediate intervention in Libya”

Local KKE is organizing a protest rally  on March 12, at 12 noon at the City Hall of Faistos.
