Greece’s Animals Law uploaded for Public Consultation

The revised law for the protection of companion animals and strays has been uploaded on March 31 on internet for public consultation. You can write your comments until April 13, 2011. Unfortunately I can’t translate the whole law… However from the comments I’ve read so far, there are constructive proposals  and objections concerning the provisions about micro-chipping and strays regularly fed by volunteers.

The very good news are the provisions about any kind of animal abuse and in particular: burning, hanging, poisoning, abutation etc. here I have notice that the minimum punishments in imprisonment and fines are not mentioned!

Punishment is increased as follows:

No redeemable imprisonment up to 5 years and fine 5,000-30,000 euro.

For violating provisions banning the use of animals for circuses etc. Imprisonment up to 2 years, fine 5,000-30,000 euro.

Stealing of companion animals: Imprisonment up to 5 months and 3,000 euros fine.

Stealing of hunting dog: Imprisonment up to 1 year and 8,000 euro fine.

In case of repetition of the law violation, the punishment is doubled.

You can read the whole law and the provisions here. The comments you will find on the right bar of the site www.opengov.gr. Please, share and forward in order to reach as many people as possible and not miss the chance for a constructive change!

  1. All animals deserve protection from those that inflict atrocities, just as humans need laws protecting them from the scum that do same. All crimes should be punishable and severe crimes such as torture and neglect need to be prosecuted.

  2. In Greece we don’t respecet animals rights, so we need a strict law to protect them.
