(Upd) Fire in Saudi Arabian plane – Emergency Landing at Athens Airport

Update: It looks as if the ‘fire alarm’ in the luggage space of the Saudi Arabian Airline was just a false indication at the cockpit, Greek media reported. Earlier today the Boeing 707 with 240 passengers and crew made an emergency landing at the Athens airport. The flight from Washington to Ryad was in Athens FIR when the pilots reported fire or smoke in the luggage area and asked permission for emergency landing.  After the landing at the cargo area of the airport all passengers and the crew were evacuated. One hour later the luggage space was opened but no sign of smoke or fire around.

Two F-16 escorted the plane to Athens airport. The plane reportedly belonging to Saudi Arabian Airlines was flying over the island of Kythira, when the fire broke out.
