Keratea Landfill: Non-Stop Protest with 2m deep trench in the middle of the road

The struggle spirit of the Keratea citizens opposing government plans for a landfill has not limits. Last night ‘inknown revolters’ dug a two meter deep trench in the middle of the main Layrio road in order to prohibit construction units to reach the area. The trench was dug during the night. Weird enough the riot police forces stationed there since two months… didn’t hear or see anything. Yesterday the police association submitted a complaint against their leadership complaining about their working conditions. They have threatened with work stoppages.

Kerate citizens are complaining about the landfill and the permanent presence of police forces. The police is complaining about the working conditions.
The government refuses the dialogue with the citizens and leaves the ‘solution’ of the problem to … police.

A ‘democratic’ deadlock?

Beginning of the week EU Commissioner for Environment Janez Potocnik visited Keratea and spoke with the residents. However he refrained from making a statement, twitting “It’s for Greece to decide where to locate any landfills, not EU. But landfilling should be a last resort” and that “the landfill is an internal Greek matter”.

The landfill is to be created 2,5 km away from the Ovriokastro village, next to an arcaeologicalsite. Keratea is located 50 km south-west of Greek capital Athens.
