Alexandros Giotopoulos, the leader of terrorist organization “17. November” returned to prison on Monday afternoon following a ruling by the Greek Supreme Court.
82-year-old Giotopoulos was serving 17 times life sentences for his role in the organization but he was released on May 22, 2026, after 24 years in jail, for health reasons.
From the very first time, the prosecutor of Supreme Court sought to revoke the decision.
Earlier today, on Monday, the Greek Supreme Court published a ruling accepting a proposal by the Deputy Prosecutor to overturn a decision by the Piraeus Court of Appeal Judicial Council that had recently ordered the release of Giotopoulos.
As a result, Giotopoulos was re-arrested and returned to Korydallos prison.he will stay in jail until summer 2027, when he will have fulfilled the condition of serving 25 years in prison and then be released again.
According to a Law of 2020, those sentences to life usually are being released after 25 years behind bars.
When he was released in May, some media reported that there was pressure against his early release by the U..S. administration.
Members of 17 November that remain in jail include Dimitris Koufodinas and the brothers Savvas and Christodoulos Xiros.
