5 May 2010: Remembering the Marfin victims

5 May 2010: Clouds of thick smoke are coming out the building of Marfin Bank, Stadiou branch in Athens downtown. Some bank employees are standing at the balconies screaming for help. Down on the street thousands of protesters try to help but have no means. An unprecedented tragedy is taking place in the middle of the city. When fire brigades enter the Marfin building they make a macabre finding. Three people, three bank employees lay there, dead, suffocated from the fatal smoke…

Paraskevi Zoulia, 35, Nontas Tsakalis, 36, and pregnant Aggeliki Papathanasopoulou, 32.   

The fire broke out when unidentified culprits hurled fire bombs inside the bank amid a huge demonstration against the International Monetary Fund and austerity measures.

5 May 2011: A couple of days ago police detained two suspects for hurling the fire bombs inside the Marfin Bank. They were later were set free. There was not enough evidence to ‘nail’ them with the Marfin fire.

Parakevi, Nontas and Aggeliki are still waiting for answers …
