Rania, Queen of Jordan, to visit refugees camp on Lesvos

Queen Rania, the wife of King Abdullah of Jordan will visit the island of Lesvos next week, following in invitation of international humanitarian organization In International Rescue Committee.

The Queen has reportedly expressed the desire to visit the island that has been the gateway to Europe for hundreds of thousands of refugees primarily form Syria, in the last 15 months.

The Embassy of Jordan in Athens confirmed the royal visit on Tuesday.

Upon her own request, Queen will visit the Kara Tepe refugee camp, a camp set up by the municipality of Lesvos.

The Kara Tepe camps hosts hundreds of refugees, mainly families and vulnerable groups, who have applied for asylum and are awaiting for the examination of their application. The camp is considered as “a model camp” for refugees.

Jordan is heavily affected by the civil wars in its neighboring countries Syria and Iraq. According to UNHCR, Jordan hosts at least 660,000 refugees.

The 46-year-old Queen was born in Kuwait to Palestinian parents who were refugees.

The exact day of her visit to Lesvos has not become known yet, Greek press speaks of “the beginning of Holy Week” which starts on April 25th 2016.

  1. Half of Jordan’s population are Palestinian [refugees]. Meanwhile Jordan is the location of US training camps for “moderate Syrian opposition” lol
