Floods and landslides in Chania as low ‘Daedalus’ strikes Crete (picts, videos)

Homes and shops were flooded, streets turned into rivers, swollen streams and landslides and tons of mud in and around Chania as barometric low Daedalus kept striking the island of Crete early Thursday morning.

The Fire Service receives dozens of phone calls from the morning by citizens who have been “victims” of bad weather.

Many motorists were trapped in the cars in various areas of the Prefecture, many were forced to abandon their vehicles in the middle of the street.

One motorists did not realize there was a ditch under the water, drove with his car inside.

A mother and her child were rescued by the Fire Brigades when their car got trapped in the waters.

The mayor of Platanias Municipality ordered the schools to remain closed on Thursday and Friday due to the extreme floods. Th mayor requested the ‘state of emergency’ for the area. He urged citizens to strictly follow the advice of the traffic police.

So far the fire Service has received more than 270 phone calls for aid and pumping water.

No injuries have been reported so far.

The weather is expected to improve as of Thursday night, however, rain is expected also on Friday.

  1. Yes we were there and witnesses this. Our Hotel was flooded, power cut etc and we had to be moved out. They told us it had never been seen before. Definitely another sign of the advance of Global warming. We all need to wake up to reality – are you listening Trump!!
