Amazing rare footage from Crete filmed in 1910! The 108-year-old film captures animated scenery, pictures from Chania, Herakleio and other inland areas. It shows scenes from every day life but also festivities like the celebration of The Blessing of the Waters – Theophany – in front of the Venetian Castle, Kule, in Irakleio.
At that time the island of Crete was not yet officially united with Greece.
The video was probably filmed by Frenchmen
It is an impressive, historical record with unique pictures from Crete.

This of course was before the forced population swaps. It’s interesting to see the mix of cultures and the number of mosque minarets. Crete must have been a very different place back then…
