Demolitions of illegal buildings started in Sounio area, South Attica

Demolitions of illegal buildings in the area of Sounion in South Attica started on Wednesday, the Greek Environment and Energy Minister said. The first demolition took place in Agrileza along the Athens-Sounion national road. Demolitions in Marathonas-Dionysos are scheduled to start next week.

The first round of demolitions affect 22 illegal buildings in the above mentioned areas.

For these illegal constructions Greek courts have issued irrevocable demolition decisions and the demolitions take place with the owners’ consent.

The first demolition of an unlicensed building took place in a forest-declared area in Agrileza, the Environment and Energy Ministry said in a statement on Thursday, adding pictures from the bulldozers work.

As of Sept 3rd, demolition of illegal buildings and constructions will start in Marathonas-Dionysos area in East Attica.

The government plan is to demolish a total of 3,200 illegal buildings and constructions in forest, national parks and courses of rivers and streams in  the Attica Prefecture, the Ministry said.

Demolition is possible after the government passed the relevant legislation with fast track procedures last month after preliminary reports blamed among others illegal constructions for the death of dozens of people during the Athens wildfires.
