Ex Hospital director gets 7-year suspended sentence for ‘free treatment’ to prominent Greeks

Former chairman of Henry Dunant Hospital, Andreas Martinis, was sentenced to 7 years suspended imprisonment after burdening the hospital with 1.75 million euros for free treatments he offered to prominent individuals

He used the funds aiming to needy, offering to “prominent” patients without financial problems expensive examinations and staying in the hospital for free or at a ridiculous cost price.

He “paid” for the expensive treatment of his relatives as well as of politicians, journalists and artists. From 2007 until 2010, the total loss for the hospital was 22 million euros, media report.

The 3-member Felony Court in Athens found Martinis guilty in more than 8,100 cases.

His lawyer complained that not one of Martinis’ “beneficiaries” was called to testify before the court. The former Hospital director will appeal the court decision.

It should be noted that the trial against him for a bribe of 3.1 million Deutsche Mark is still pending.

Martinis will remain out of prison until his case is tried on second instance courts. He was released from prison due to “health reasons.”

The International Red Cross discharged him from membership in zero time, when it heard about the scandal. Martinis was also chairman of the Red Cross Greek branch and the public hospital of the same name in downtown Athens.

PS and the question many Greeks ask is: why did a cleaner, mother of 13, who forged an Elementary school document, was sent to prison right away?
