Greek Meteo Service Weather Warning: Thunderstorms over the weekend

Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY warns of sudden weather deterioration wih rainfalls and sporadic thuderstorms over the weekend, July 13-14, 2019.

In a warning issued on Friday noon, EMY notes that it will be mostly regions in Central and North Greece that will be affected by the bas weather front and thus as of the evneing hours of Saturday, July 13, until Sunday noon, July 14

Areas affected according to EMY:

 

  • Initially North Ionian Sea, probably West Sterea
  • As of Saturday midnight until  Sunday noon Central and East Macedonia, northern parts of Thessaly, the north Sporades island and the islands in the North Aegean Sea.

The region of Halkidiki that was hit by a freak thunderstorm with 7 dead, 120 injured and severe damages in homes and businesses on Wednesday night will also be affected by storms.

The Civil Protection and the Fire Service in Central Macedonia have warned of the upcoming bad weather and urge citizens keep informed about the development of the weather as well as to take precautionary measures for their safety.

“According to forecast a weather deterioration lies ahead and I recommend that citizens ought to be careful, avoid unnecessary movements, take protective measures, said the Chief of Central Macedonia Fire Service, Spyros Varsamis. “Each of us needs to participate in order to achieve greater security and avoid unpleasant incidents,” he added.

TV meteorologists have said that the thunderstorm in Halkidiki is not going to be as severe as the one on Wednesday.

The Civil Protection conduced a test for early warning via sms per <112> phone number on Friday. The test was conducted to mobile phones identified to be in Halandri suburb of Athens.

The test was successful, however, I cannot tell you whether the Early Warning system will be available nationwide as of …Saturday, let’s say. Currently, the messages are in Greek only.
